“Working on the familiar triggered something in me that caused
me to write something I had never found words for before.”

-- Lisa, an emotion literacy explorer--

We invite you to contribute as a sponsor
and
celebrate the further development of an on-line publication:

the familiar:
certain words in uncertain times

Since fall semester 1999, a self-selected group of Garfield High School students participated in the development of the familiar--a language arts and emotion literacy curriculum pioneered by language arts teacher Christina Roux and teaching artist, author Pamela Sackett. Students who worked on the familiar as part of the creative staff or technical team earned honors credit. The first two issues of our on-line publication are up and running. Together, we will launch this innovative use of technology as a window into diverse worlds of teen experience, insight-filled artistic expression and community.

Seed money for this project was provided by the Weeden Foundation and the Parent Teacher Student Association. We are seeking your help to accomplish the following:

  • continue offering this project to in-coming language arts students
  • maintain this interactive site and electronic publishing component of the language arts curriculum
  • expand our list of adult members of Seattle’s literary/visual arts and emotion literacy advocacy community who volunteer to write for the familiar
  • recruit writers from parent and teacher organizations, other schools, at risk youth groups, and community members interested in learning emotion literacy as a tool for violence prevention in our schools and neighborhoods

As the foundation for the Seattle Public School District, The Alliance for Education is pleased to serve as the fiscal agent for the familiar. The Alliance for Education is the not-for-profit fiscal agent for programs and projects which support the Seattle Public Schools and is classified under Section a 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Service Code. Your donation is tax-deductible.
