We welcome your participation with the familiar and we need it because the more of us who understand emotion literacy, the more we can communicate with each other in an authentic way. The more authentic our communication, the kind that fosters understanding of ALL of our feelings, the kinder and more inclusive the world will become.

We value the language arts because it is through language that we get to know ourselves and our community. In an emotion literate world, who we are begins with how we feel. In an emotion literate world, who we are proceeds with our identification and knowledge of how we feel through language. Feelings are complex, pervasive and universal entities and sometimes we need the complexity of artful language to do them justice.

It is our aim to represent feelings in a glowing light, and to honor their presence in diverse situations, relationships and circumstances. We encourage all our writers to give us a window into their process towards knowing, embracing and expressing their feelings through words. Since our use of language affects our awareness of feelings and can discourage, prohibit or mask feelings, it is important to learn new ways of using language and practice relying on those ways like an athlete relies upon exercise for strength, stamina, flexibility and, ultimately, insight.

the familiar’s site content is authored by adult advocates and student explorers of emotion literacy. Please peruse the site for their footprints. By contributing writing to the familiar as a site visitor, you will be gifting us with your path of discovery and your journey will then join the map of this evolutionary terrain.

It is reasonable to expect that there will be writings on this site that may confuse and stir you up. Language is notorious for evoking feelings especially creative use of language. Since we share experiences of having our feelings rejected before we are even aware of them, we recognize that some site visitors might be inclined to lash out instead of taking full responsibility for their own reactions. However, this site does not accept criticism because our writers are not contributing to the site for stringent evaluation. Our writers are generous and courageous and offer their work to be witnessed for inspiration, insight and company. If your visit to the site has provided you with some of that, please let us know. If not, let yourself know. Claiming full responsibility for your reactions, in any context, is both a science and an art and begins with unadulterated curiosity. We welcome your questions about writings that affect you. We reserve the right to limit what is on the site to writings that, according to our mission and our expanding sense-abilities, foster emotion literacy. We thank you for your interest and are eager to hear from you.
