lost mothers

baby's crying

as mommy's voice

fades down the hall

her heels click

stilettos on the linoleum

as they lead her away

strangers lean over

the edge of her crib

watch the tears roll down chubby cheeks

but soon

the baby can't remember

mommy's voice or the click of her shoes

in mommy's ear forever

a baby's crying

as she walks down the hall
