pamela sackett
-- founding editor --

Pamela Sackett, founder of Emotion Literacy Advocates, uses words and personal expression to illustrate the essential role language plays in relationship to feelings and emotions. Skilled in the art of monologue, story-telling and rhythmic prose as a means to inspire, teach and entertain, Sackett's work has found its way into international literary and dramatic arts venues as well as academic, therapeutic and social service settings.

With her eclectic writing and performing background and her facility to give voice to emotional truths, Sackett's unique synthesis took root in her work designing plays and monologues for special populations, professional actors and students. Crazy in the Mainstream, a play based on the lives of six mentally and emotionally ill people, was facilitated by Washington Alliance for the Mentally Ill. Count Me In, a play designed for twenty-eight Garfield High School drama students and Trigger of Light: a collage of voices based on her work with kids in the King County Youth Detention Facility were funded by the Seattle Repertory Theatre's Education & Outreach program.

Her series of four monologue books, Two Minutes To Shine: Thirty Potent New Monologues for the Auditioning Actor, are published and internationally distributed by Samuel French, New York. Bob Hicks of The Oregonian has called her "a genuine comic talent with a gift for quick quips, clever wordplay and the linguistically unexpected." Michael Weaver, Elliott Bay Book Company International Reading Series Host says, "Ms. Sackett's monologues speak for themselves with a voice alternately hilarious and quite touching. The audience was rapt and entertained." Sackett's first book of rhythmic prose titled Speak of the Ghost: In The Name of Emotion Literacy is distributed through Emotion Literacy Advocates. Of Pamela's Speak of the Ghost, Arnold Mindell, author and originator of process-oriented psychology says, "...you will find everyone on trial, caught and transformed." Journey editor, Mary LeLoo, says "Pamela uses poetry as I believe it is meant to be used: articulately and precisely, wielding the power of emotional truth, one syllable at a time."

As a professional writer, performer and advisor to teachers, artists, therapists, managers and parents on the conscious use of language, her goal for the emotion literacy ‘campaign’ is to increase powers of communication. Sackett says "any group, organization or individual who believes there is room in their daily world for improved powers of communication benefits from my program."

Organizations that have sponsored Pamela’s work--using expressive art, public workshops and community dialogue to foster emotion literacy--include Powerful Schools, Cornish College of The Arts, Americorps, KUOW, Seniors Making Art, Elliott Bay Book Company, Seattle Repertory Theatre Company, The Seattle Counselor’s Association, Seattle University, University of Washington, Antioch University, Seattle Central Community College, North Seattle Community College, The National Association for Women in Psychology, IPIPP Community Affairs Radio, KCMU, North Rehabilitation Facility, Overlake High School, The Bush School, Garfield High School, Alder Academy for At-Risk Youth, KAOS Radio, Safeplace Women’s Shelter Services, Inc., The Matt Talbot Center, The Richard Hugo House and 911 Media Arts Center.

Pamela earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychodynamic Writing for Dramatic Interpretation from Antioch University, Seattle. Garfield’s Parent Teacher Student Association, The Weeden Foundation, The Seattle Arts Commission, King County Arts Commission, US West and the Metropolitan Arts Commission of Portland are among the organizations that have awarded her grants.
