mission statement

the familiar, an online publication, rooted in the tenets of emotion literacy advocacy, was created to provide a collaborative venue for teenagers and adults. Conceived by teaching artist Pamela Sackett and writing instructor Christina Roux in conjunction with her unique language arts program at Garfield High School, it is through this venue we seek to generate public dialogue amongst students, mentoring professional writers and artists and a diverse reading population.

the familiar raises questions, challenges common thinking patterns, and offers feeling-inclusive perspectives on contemporary topics through the language arts, visual images and creative expression.
