what students have to say about this project

--JACQUEINE --
"During the time that I have been coming to the meetings for the familiar, it has not only stirred up my chain of thought but gave me an opportunity to say and express things that I really didn’t get a chance to do before. I begin to bond with and understand the minds and thoughts of the people around me, to share my world, that which I would not allow otherwise. Now I’m beginning to understand and feel the joy of others. It has created an invisible yet indestructible bond between us, finding out our similarities, realizing I’m not the only one who thinks like that or feels that way."

-- BRYCE --
"When most students go to school, it is a place to learn their reading, writing and arithmetic. School is a place where we copy the examples of others, find cube roots and write narrative essays about political figures. This is all good and necessary by any standards, but it does leave a giant hole in our education. the familiar is the only outlet that I have at Garfield to express my feelings about things that not only affect myself but all teens. This group is not only an outlet for feelings, it also provides me with a medium to help others through my writing and the writing of the familiar authors. Today, life for teens is not what it used to be. When parents divorce or friends OD, there is really no place to go. This group is not only an outlet for my feelings, but an outlet and a place to heal for anyone who reads this. In general, education refers to learning how to cross I’s and dot T’s, but it leaves a gap in our education. It’s about time the students were given the type of education we really need."

-- TARA --
"I think that this program has further opened my eyes to the world around me. I started examining myself more. Sharing my opinions with others and hearing their writing was a highlight of my week. I finally had something to write for. To have this open forum of expression was really refreshing. We are all so different and I believe that we are capable of producing a very thought-diverse on-line publication."
