Founding Artist, Board & History
Pamela Sackett is the principal artist and founder of ELA. The organization grew out of her work as a literary artist, performer and author: designing plays and monologues for actors, theatre audiences and special populations since 1984, conducting workshops, and producing an emotion literacy curriculum for her artist residencies in private and public schools, and other learning institutions.
The Board of Directors was founded in January 2001, and is comprised of artistic and passionate people, with backgrounds ranging from publishing, alternative medicine, human services, information technology, and, of course, the arts.
Historical Projects: Here are a few representative projects showing the development of ELA's nascent work.
In late 1994 , Seattle Repertory Theatre Company's Outreach and Education department set up an artist's residency for Pamela at the King County Youth Detention facility in Seattle, Washington. As a result of additional funding support from Seattle Repertory Organization, Pamela created "Trigger of Light," a play—performed live and also aired on the radio—reflecting her work with detention youth and the perspectives of adults who populate their world. An emotion literacy teaching tool, this collage of voices includes detainees' writings, verbatim excerpts from interviews with key adults and Pamela's original, guiding narrative.
In 1996, Pamela collaborated with visual artist Mark Magill to create The Radical Nurturer as an emotion literacy learning tool for early high school students.
In 1999, Pamela and Seattle's Garfield High School writing instructor Christina Roux conceived the familiar as part of a unique language arts program incorporating emotion literacy exploration. During the course of one school year, Pamela worked with self-selected writing students, lead teacher Roux and ELA artist-mentors to create two editions for the web.
